Amazon Villa

Overview

The Amazon Villa is a private bungalow designed to provide you with privacy, creature comforts, and exclusive activities that enhance an already unforgettable Amazon jungle experience. The exclusive treatment begins upon arrival to the airport with private transport to the bungalow, continues throughout your stay, and doesn’t end until we bring your back to the airport for your departure flight. It is ideal for romantic getaways or as an exclusive hideaway. Highlights include:

  • Unplug -This 180 m2 bungalow in the middle of the nowhere wraps you in beautiful views of the surrounding forest. It is completely independent: a home in the rain forest. You have no neighbors. Contact with the non-Amazonian world is strictly optional.
  • Claylicks – Take a boat trip to the Chuncho Clay Lick inside the Tambopata National Reserve to see macaws descend to eat clay lick in clear mornings.
  • Discover a New Species – Join our resident and help him collect insects that will be genetically sequenced. Every month, a lucky guest discovers a new tiger-moth, scorpion-wasp, caddisfly or treehopper species that is new to science!
  • Canopy Tower - Our 30-meter scaffolding canopy tower gives you spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest. You will have good chances of spotting toucans, parrots, macaws or mixed species canopy flocks.
  • Camera Trapping at a Mammal Clay Lick – Configure camera traps at a nearby mammal clay lick and download wildlife photos from the past few days to help scientists find out what is present at The Big Grid, our 288 kilometer trail system experiment.
  • Life in the Rainforest - Visit a working jungle farm and a real Brazil nut concession to learn about the way of life in the rain forest. You will taste exotic tropical fruits and discover medicinal plants from the neighboring local families that we are helping integrate into the ecotourism industry.
  • Lake - We will paddle around the Lake Condenado on a catamaran, looking for wildlife such a hoatzin, caiman or horned screamers.
  • Adventure in Nature – Kayak and Stand-Up Paddle on the Tambopata River and rappel to a Canopy Platform.
  • Exclusive Dining, Transportation and Guiding – You can have a barbecue prepared in your private porch, take the boat out for a sunset cruise or ask the guide for a trip to hang out at the canopy tower, alone.

How To Get To the Amazon Villa

The Amazon Villa requires at least four hours of travel time. The first step on the journey to Tambopata includes a plane ride from either Lima or Cuzco. Flights from Lima depart from the domestic terminal of the Jorge Chavez airport. The trip takes around 3 hours. Most flights stop in Cuzco before continuing on to Puerto Maldonado. Flights from Cusco depart from the domestic terminal of the Velasco Astete airport. The trip takes around forty-five minutes.

We ask you to take one of the following flights from Lima, Cusco or Puerto Maldonado so that we do not have to be in the river in the dark.

Upon arrival to Puerto Maldonado, you will be greeted by one or more of our guides and then taken to a waiting vehicle. You will take short ride to our operations office in Puerto Maldonado where we will ask you to store luggage you don’t need. Luggage is hand-carried at various stages in the trip for long distance so we ask you to please limit your weight to 15 kilos (32 pounds apiece).
You can pack separate bags and safely leave them at our offices in Puerto Maldonado on the first day so we won’t be carrying them around uselessly. Your bag will be waiting for you at the airport the day you leave. After taking care of luggage, we take a 40-minute drive to the Infierno Community Port where we board long, sturdy canoes equipped with outboard motors and head upstream to Refugio Amazonas. The three-hour boat ride is pleasant and often includes our first sightings of macaws, heron, caiman and capybara. Once the boat arrives at the lodge dock, you will have officially arrived to the wild rainforests of Tambopata!

Macaw Clay LickMacaw Clay Lick
On most clear mornings of the year dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle which inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discretely located hundred meters from the cliff, we will observe Green-winged, Scarlet and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. Outings are at dawn when the lick is most active.
Ox Bow Lake VisitOx Bow Lake Visit
We will paddle around the lake on a canoe or a catamaran, looking for lakeside wildlife such a hoatzin, caiman and hornerd screamers. You will also be rewarded with overhead sightings of macaws and parrots.
Canopy TowerCanopy Tower
A thirty minute walk leads to the 25 meter scaffolding canopy tower. A bannistered staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. The tower has been built upon high ground, therefore increasing your horizon of the continuous primary forest extending out towards the Tambopata National Reserve. From here views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws and raptors are likely.
Discover A Species New To ScienceDiscover A Species New To Science
Help our team of entomologists and collaborators from the Museum of Natural History patiently catalog each one of the thousands of species of insects present in the Tambopata river basin. We are working on tiger moths, treehoppers, scorpion wasps and others. Every month one of our guests discovers a new species.
Mammal Clay Lick & Camera TrappingMammal Clay Lick & Camera Trapping
You will help San Diego Zoo scientists obtain data that will answer questions about the density and movement patterns of large mammals in Tambopata. You will visit a mammal clay lick located in one of the corners of the Big Grid, a 288 kilometer experimental trail system that has camera traps placed within it.
Nature Trail HikeNature Trail Hike
We leave from the lobby at Posada Amazonas and embark on a two hour hike crowned by the largest tree in the vicinity: a giant ceiba tree. During the hike we will focus on the natural history of the rain forest and its principal taxonomic groups.
Caiman SearchCaiman Search
We will be out at the river’s edge at night, scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes.
Jungle Farm VisitJungle Farm Visit
A thirty minute boat drive downriver takes us to the most complete farm in the community of Infierno. The owner grows a diverse variety of popular and unknown Amazon crops. In his garden, just about every plant and tree serves a purpose.
Jungle Night WalkJungle Night Walk
You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
Canopy ClimbingCanopy Climbing
Replicating the daily work of macaw researchers, we will climb a 30 meter tree with a rope, harness and jumar. From this vantage point we will have a macaws eye view of the forest. This demanding exercise is perfectly safe and requires no previous experience.
KayakingKayaking
*NOTE: $75 cost is for Posada Amazonas and Refugio Amazonas. No previous experience is required. A boat will bring us upriver and then we will paddle down a portion of the Tambopata River with some rapids, although most of the progress presents low difficulty. At the shores we will observe fragmented parts of the forest and come across with locals that work at the few farms in the region. To finish our experience, we´ll stop on a sandy beach and take a well deserved bath. No experience required, only swimming knowledge.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding in TambopataStand Up Paddle Boarding in Tambopata
We will paddle up a portion of the Tambopata River that presents no difficulty. At the shores we will observe fragmented parts of the forest accompanied by nature sounds and some wildlife we may observe, like birds, caimans and turtles.
