Refugio News April / May

News from Refugio Amazonas Compiled by Correspondent Evelien Spijkman * The catamaran for trips around Sachavacayoc lake has improved. Instead of seats on only one side of the boat, the boat now has doubled the amount of seats by making extra seats on the right side of the catamaran as well. This way bigger groups of tourists are able to go on the lake. * Also the trail to the clay lick has improved. A somewhat difficult and very muddy trail now has pieces of wood serving as a bridge to go through these areas more easily. The stairs at the port towards the clay lick will be improved within a couple of weeks. * In May new staff will come to Refugio to cater for bigger groups of tourists in the upcoming high season. * Around the beginning of April a jaguar has been seen. A group of tourists were on a cayman search, on the way back from Condensado lake, when they sighted the animal. When people came back to the same spot the same day, the jaguar was seen there again. * On the 26th of April a harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) has been seen at Sachavacayoc lake. It flew over the lake and perched where it was possible to have a good look at the bird with binoculars for a few minutes. * Jerguei has left his maintenance job at Refugio. He will be a guardian instead at Rolin, an area where plans are being realized at the moment for a new tourist lodge. King Kong, already working at Refugio, will take over his job. * In the third week of April a dramatic change of weather occurred. Heavy rain (105.6 mm on the worst day) and wind made everybody stay inside the lodges. During this time the temperature dropped to freezing and made everybody wear multiple layers of clothing. * Jorge Louis, the bar tender, has leishmaniasis and is being treated for this in Puerto Maldonado. In the meanwhile, Toni, normally a peddler, takes over his job until he has recovered and comes back. * The guy who is painting the tower, Louis, is afraid of heights... * A new staff member arrived at Refugio. As being the youngest member of the group, the management recently found out ‘she’ is in fact a ‘he’. His name is Cat and is in charge of pest control.
