Nice sightings in August
August saw some exciting sightings from Refugio Amazonas - including Tapir (Tapirus terrestris), Jaguar (Panthera onca), Sloth (Bradypus variegatus), the return of the White-lipped Peccaries (Tayassu pecari), and also some new species for the sightings map - Ocelot and Paca. The Paca was seen by Betzy with her tourists while coming back late from Condenado - the oversized, spotted rodent is strictly nocturnal and prefers lowland forest near water. Although not uncommon, it is rarely seen due to its shy and retiring habits. The animal still most likely to be seen though - Saddle-backed Tamarins, with regular sightings on the Tower trail and other trails close to the lodge. Today's featured photo is a jewel beetle - there are hundreds of different varieties of amazingly patterned and coloured beetles that can often be found in association with fallen logs - as some eat the fungus that grows on older logs, and many have their larval stages inside.
