Photo: Alan Lee
Name: White-throated (Cuvier´s) Toucan
Local name: Tucán, Tio Juan
Scientific name: Ramphastos tucanus
Characteristics:
1. Feathers mainly black.
2. White throat with red at lower edge.
3. Big black beak with yellow on upper edge.
4. Size 53 to 57 cm.
Habitat and behavior: The wihite-throated Toucan is found in humid tropical forests, but occurs also in woodland and locally in riverine forests.
Diet: Frugivorous. But also feeds on insects, lizards, eggs and small vertebrates.
Reproduction habits: Courtship behaviors include bill-nibbling, allopreening, and courtship feeding. The breeding season varies with location. Nests are found in natural tree cavities, 1–18 meters off the ground. Birds often re-use cavities where they have nested successfully in the past. The two to three white eggs are elliptical in shape. Parents share incubation duties and the eggs hatch after about 15 days. Both parents feed the young, which open their eyes after 29 days and fledge after about 49 days. Capuchin monkeys are a threat to toucan eggs and chicks.
Curiosities: Biggest toucan species found in Tambopata. Song easy to recognize that differentiate it from Yellow ridge toucan, smaller but very similar. Locally know as "tiojuan".
