October

Macaws looking for an available nest

November is the month in which scarlet (Ara macao), red-and-green (Ara Chloroptera) as well as blue-and-gold macaws (Ara ararauna) start laying their first of several (1-4) eggs. As a consequence, October is the month in which pairs of these species look for nests. Nest availability is a limiting factor for macaw reproduction. Usually there are more macaw pairs, than available nests in the forest. So finding a nest for the upcoming breeding season is a very important matter. Fights are the rule, rather than the exception.
At the Tambopata Research Center, the Macaw Research Project has been studying macaw behavior and natural history since 1989. Researchers have identified natural nests, and have hung artificial ones to study the whole breeding behavior of macaws. According to the results of the research carried out here, scarlet macaws occupy most of the artificial nests, specially the vertical ones, whereas red and greens prefer the horizontal nests. On the other hand, blue-and-gold macaws nest in dead aguaje palms (Mauritia Flexuosa).

Osprey

There are several migrating bird species that are found in Tambopata only for a few months of the year. The osprey (Pandion Haliaetus) is probably one of the most conspicuous. It occurs on all continents except Antarctica. The curiosity although is that in South America it is only a non-breeding migrant. It stays in Tambopata during the boreal winter, arriving to Tambopata between October and December.
